Across many facilities, precise instrumentation, correct installation, accurate parameter configuration, and well-tuned PID control are critical to plant reliability, asset life, and operating cost. In environments such as combined-cycle gas turbine power stations, even minor inaccuracies in measurements—such as lube oil flow, temperature, or level—can be the difference between uninterrupted operation and a major rebuild. In these applications, tolerances are exceptionally tight, with small deviations capable of costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is for this reason that critical instruments are often designed with dual or triple redundancy.
Many asset owners rely heavily on factory calibration, often unaware of the impact this can have on long-term accuracy and reliability. While instruments may leave the factory within specification, extended storage in laydown yards or warehouses can expose them to environmental extremes. Temperature variation, humidity, vibration, direct sunlight, and internal electronic stress can all degrade accuracy before the device is even commissioned.
Slade Industries was founded on instrumentation and calibration expertise, originating at the Port Stanvac Oil Refinery more than 50 years ago.
